Alchemy Sliver: Introductory Post

dyntharis Hello there!

I am Kat Maul'dun. Born female, American, english speaking, millenial. Fast food worker by day, sometimes streamer, and general game design meddler.

I have a series of game development projects going in an attempt to build up to making one larger game with several interwoven systems. My hope is that in working on these smaller projects I can accumulate the community, practice, resources, and expertise needed to create the larger game. Alchemy Sliver, itself is to do with..well, alchemy.

I started Alchemy Sliver in order to learn more about creating game design documents, specifically with crafting systems. I also wanted to get an idea of what aspects I wanted to include as variables into the alchemy system itself and practice creating some of these.

All in all, I think this game is a bit challenging, but I hope that at least some may find it enjoyable. I have added at the end of this document some of the changes I made after first release, as well as, some general information about the key bindings and player interface with an RPG VX game.

If you are interested in a playthrough of this, might I suggest That Guy That Does Things.

Some Changes and General Info:

For those of you not familiar with the RPG VX key bindings:

  • It is bound to the arrow keys for movement.
  • His base movement speed is kinda zoomy, but you can modify this (as of v2), as well as the screen size, at the cloak hung in the entryway.
  • If he is not zoomy enough, you can just hold down shift for him to run
  • Press 'X' to open the Inventory when walking around and to back out/cancel.
  • Press 'Z' to select though space works for this as well.

Some issues that were found:

  • You could not add salt into the cauldron for some reason; fixed
  • You can now modify the screen size, song off/on, and character movement speed with the cloak in the entryway; added
  • If you did really bad in a book battle, it subtracted knowledge; removed.
  • When you are battling books the amount of HP heal/damage for both player and enemy are now shown and the message sits for longer; unremoved.
  • When you poke the clocks they now tell you the time section of day (noon, dusk, etc.) as well as the minutes past midnight; tweaked.
